Seen by the Unseen One

Computer and technology issues plagued me during our time in China.  Photos on my phone couldn't be paired with photos from my camera.  Photos on my camera wouldn't upload to my computer.  If and when I could get them uploaded, then I couldn't post to my blog.  My VPN worked great!  On my phone if I was just reading everyone's Facebook posts, but as soon as I tried to post or use it as a hot spot for my computer, it would crash.  I NEVER got my VPN to work on my computer.  Oh!  And then my phone service provider decided that I had used too much international data on my international data plan and shut off my phone!  It was just CRAZY!!!

Now that I'm home, I thought I'd start posting and writing about our trip.  Surely now that we are not IN CHINA, everything should work just fine...WRONG!!!  Our internet at home crashed today.  When my sweet hubby called to see what was going on, even the service provider folks were scratching their heads.  Randomly, their computer system just decided to switch us from our normal, super fast, internet plan to the bargain basement, you got nothing plan.  SERIOUSLY!  They have no idea what happened???

Gotta tell y'all, whatever it is that I want to share, whatever this message God has laid on my heart, whatever stories from the lives of these children I long to tell might be, the enemy is working overtime to stop.

So I thought I'd just start with a child from whom I have no photos...no video clips...nothing but her story to tell...

On Monday, our first day at the Children's Welfare House, our team of four was divided into two groups to go help feed the babies.  Jason and Gretchen stayed in one room on the second floor.  Miranda and I journeyed upstairs to the third floor.

Our "babies" were mostly one and two year old children.  In the US, this age child might already be feeding themselves and eating Cheerios or Gerber Puffs.  In an orphanage setting, it is just easier, quicker, faster, and cleaner to place all these little ones in strollers and shovel in spoonfuls of rice porridge from bowls larger than I think I could possibly eat myself.

Miranda sat down only to discover that her mother did not provide her with a complete education.  I failed at basic "How To Feed A Baby 101"!  All the tips and tricks that mamas learn from hundreds of spoons of goop!  Wipe the bottom of the spoon before offering it to the baby.  Use the spoon to catch any dribbles and keep the face clean.  Make silly sounds and open your mouth wide to encourage the baby to do the same.  Yep!  Epic fail on my part!

Later, Miranda also shared with me an extra challenge she had.  Her baby was BLIND!  Miranda learned from one of the nannies that she had to get the spoon right to her lips before she would open her mouth, but by then the Sweet Baby Girl was soooooo mad that she wasn't being fed fast enough that she was DONE with Miranda.  Added to the difficulty level, this Sweet Baby Girl also HATES strangers!  She won't let anyone touch her that she doesn't know and is even picky with the staff about who can and cannot touch her.

I LOVE A CHALLENGE!!!
I LOVE KIDS!!!
I LOVE A CHALLENGING KID!!!

The next day Miranda happily switched babies with me.  Even after my late night "How To" coaching lessons, she was just more comfortable feed another little sweetheart.  Plus I was excited to see if this one would let me feed her!

I know very little Chinese.  But of the few words and phrases I've learned, I can say a few important ones.  I've teased Keziah since she came home by cradling her in my arms and cooing "Shao baobei."  Translation - a term of endearment for a baby; sweetheart; sweet little treasure.  Some days she loves being babied.  Some days it's just silliness and fun.

We laugh at our house because Christopher and I both tried to learn some more Chinese before traveling to bring Peiwu home using Rosetta Stone software.  Christopher only remembers one phrase, "They are eating food."  Perfect for Peiwu!!!  Because all she wanted to do was "eat food."  Baba said, "chi fan," and she was happy!

So what do you think I babbled to my Sweet Little Princess while I was feeding her?

"Shao baobei...Chi fan...Chi fan?"

Mix in plenty of yummy sounds and bringing the spoon right up under her nose so she could smell and feel the rice close to her mouth and I was super successful!

Score 1 for the Mom!

After my Sweet Baby Girl, we had some extra time.  The nannies allowed us to take the children out of their strollers to snuggle, cuddle, and play with them.  I decided to give it a try.  She had let me feed her.  Would she let me hold her?!?!?

Lifting her up and holding her tightly, I continued to babble "Shao Baobei," to my Sweet Baby Girl.  She was stiff and struggled against me at times but soon relaxed in my arms as long I held her firmly.  If I moved the wrong way, she would startle because she didn't feel safe.

Our primary guide during our days at the orphanage entered the room to collect us for lunch and stopped, shock etched on her face.  She came over to me telling me that Sweet Baby Girl was blind.  I nodded that I already knew.  She continued to explain to me that she did NOT like strangers.  Yes, I knew that too.  She shared with me a story about my strong-willed Sweet Baby Girl even refusing to let her hold her one day.  Her face softened as she began to praise me for being a "very good mama."

Each time we would feed our babies, I choose to feed my Sweet Baby Girl.  Each time we played with them after feedings, she would let me hold her, sway back and forth so the breeze took hold of her dark locks of hair, swoosh her down to the floor and lift her back up safe in my arms.  She walked around the room holding my finger for guidance and safety.  On our last day together, she even fussed at me until I retrieved her blankie so she could snuggle with it on my shoulder.

In my arms, I whispered her name as I whispered prayers in my heart for her.  In her ears, I told her of my love for her, "Wo ai ni, Shao Baobei!" and told her of One who loves her more.  Showering her with kisses in her soft baby hair, I reminded us both that she is seen by the Unseen One.

I have no pictures of my Sweet Baby Girl.  I can not show you her smile.  You can not hear her sweet laughter.  She lives behind walls far, far away.  But she is one of the many precious treasure with whom I spent my days in China.  She is unseen and unseeing...but she is seen by the One who loves her more than any other.  He declares her His Priceless Princess!

My Sweet Baby Girl is one of the many children around the globe in need of homes and families to shower them with love.  I was called to hold her in my arms for just a few short days...to love on her with abandon...to allow my heart to be broken into pieces...so I can share her story and the stories of all the other children in need of someone to answer God's call, His whispers to your heart to open your heart and home...to see the unseen....

*****  UPDATE  *****

"JOY"!!!

AWAA has added to their Waiting Child Listing "JOY" - the Priceless Little Princess whose story I shared with you!

"Joy is designated by the CCCWA as a special focus file and is from one of our agency’s orphanage partnerships. A family at any stage of the process is eligible to review this file."

"Joy" is paper ready and waiting to come home!

Those who have requested and received the password to view AWAA's Waiting Child List can see photos and video clips of "Joy," see her smile and hear her laughter.  Of all the names given to these waiting children, I love hers most of all because she is truly a JOY!

Video Vision - written July 8, 2014

"Why are you going to China?  What are you going to do there?  Aren't you going to build something?"

There have been tons of questions and comments from all over about this mission trip.  (Not all of the nice or kind.)

Explaining the purpose behind a mission trip to an orphanage in China has been challenging at times.  Most people expect that there is some tangible purpose, like a building or some sort of manual labor that leaves behind evidence of our efforts.  Other people expect that our trip would have a defined evangelical activity, like leading a vacation Bible school.

Last night as our team "met" for our last video conference chat over computer or iPad screens, we also wondered about what our impact will be on the lives of the children and staff with whom we get to spend our days in China.

After wrapping up with prayer time for all the craziness we are all feeling and experiencing in these final countdown days and hours, Miranda wandered into my bedroom for our typical post-call debriefing.  (Yes, Gretchen, she lets me know everything I do wrong or forget!)…

…She puzzled over the tight rope balance between loving on the kids enough and too much.  The reality is that we only have just a few days with the children!  Communicating to their hearts their value and worth from the eyes of their Heavenly Father, and pouring as much of His love into their lives in the limited hours or minutes we have with them feels overwhelming.  But Miranda also understands the problem these precious little ones face with repeated broken attachments as our family struggles daily attempting to help her sisters' heart heal.  Falling in love and then leaving them behind…again.

How to reassure my daughter when my own heart is struggling?

Then I remembered a short video clip sent to me from a family that is waiting to bring a child home from the orphanage we will be visiting!

We sat and watch this precious little one dancing with bells to Chinese music playing in the background.  So familiar to our family as we recalled the "Bell Dance" Peiwu's Chinese dance group preformed for the Year of the Snake celebration (2012).

Tears began to flow down Miranda's cheeks as I declared that this child and the family waiting is the reason we are going!  And so many other children with families already waiting or the children with referral files waiting to be matched with their forever families!

We remember how precious and treasured any information about our girls was during the long months we waited for them to come home.

Pictures of Keziah from a mission group that visited in the summer of 2008 showing her with her Foster Mama and a baby in her care comforted us while we waited and Keziah's aching heart for the familiar when she came home.  Stories and pictures from a homecoming reunion travel group that enjoyed time at the orphanage just 6 weeks before we left for China told of our happy silly girl, her infectious laughter, her sense of humor that defied any language barrier, her best buddy who was always by her side.

For Peiwu, we only received a few pictures and a four sentence update from her orphanage and poured over each word to discover any additional glimpse into the life of our little one.  When flooding affected her home city during the summer we waited for Peiwu to come home, I followed updates from Half the Sky about the children at her orphanage.  It was so hard to know that my daughter was so far away, and I could do nothing to help her, soothe her fears, or provide food when it was scarce.

This is one of the many reasons why we are going to China!

Realizing how important photos, video images, or our first hand experiences will be to the parents or potential parents of the children!  Knowing that for some of these children not yet matched with their forever families that we could provide helpful information to calm fears and encourage a mama and baba to follow God's leading and His whispers to their hearts that this precious child is their son or daughter.

Miranda questioned for a moment how families might feel about our privilege to meet their child, to hold them, to hug them, to laugh and play with them while the parents waited?????

Oh how fleeting these doubts faded!

We know that we are so thankful for those who poured into our little girls' lives…their birth families…the nannies who cared for them…Keziah's foster family…and the families who shared their stories of our spicy, sassy sweethearts!

A short video clip from a waiting family reminded us both of the vision and the mission that draws our hearts to China…God's amazing love for all.

Inspiration

Tonight we attend the celebration of life for a friend from our Small Group, a celebration of her transfer from life here on earth to her heavenly, forever home with the God who loved her more passionately than she loved Him!

Loving wife to her best friend…devoted mom to her two boys…a SMILE that out shined any cliche as her infectious JOY lit up any room…committed and encouraging friend and neighbor…her whole life pointing toward her Savior, Lord, and Lover of her soul…through a two year battle with leukemia she continually praised God and thanked Him for all the blessings in her life…such a sweet spirit poured from her life and the legacy she has left behind.

In her final weeks, she had amazing friends who helped her record messages for her family and also to all who attended her funeral.

What did she have to say?

First and foremost, like every aspect of the evening and every facet of her life, she pointed everyone to the gospel message - Jesus Christ was God's Son who came to earth to die on a cross so that all who choose to believe and receive this free gift of forgiveness of all our sin, every choice in life that falls short of God's perfect and holy righteousness.  We are LOVED by a God who wants a personal, intimate relationship with us as His children and part of His family!

Her final commission to all those who have loved on them and poured into their life and family through these difficult days…SPREAD IT!  SHARE IT!  KEEP ON LIVING OUT GOD'S LOVE!  Make it real for those who are in the dark places of life, alone!

I have only been blessed to have known the impact of this woman's life in this final year of her life.  However, now as I prepare to leave for China just weeks after she left for heaven, I will take her words to heart and live them out.  I now get to LOVE on these kiddos for two!  May my arms carry all the love D.R. lived out on this earth.  May my lips whisper prayers over children just as she did for so many with her final breaths.

Two Too Today

China is getting closer every day!

Our team leaves in just two weeks!

Today, I sprung a surprise appointment on Miranda…SHOTS!!!  Wanting to make sure we were both prepared for travel in the summer, I scheduled an appointment with the county health department for vaccines recommended before traveling to China.  We both ended up with an adult Polio booster in one arm and a Typhoid vaccine in the other arm.  OUCH!!!  They hurt!  Not quite sure how I'm gonna get to sleep tonight with both arms so sore?

Each week our team "meets" together on Wednesday nights for a video conference call.  (Technology is so amazing!)  Time to share together, chat, plan, and prepare for this great adventure.

After wrapping up, Miranda and I finished assembling some gifts we are taking with us for staff at the orphanage and our guide.  We were debriefing about the day and her evening with her Wednesday night youth group.  She shared about the young college student intern's message and how much it and the worship time had touched her heart.

"Mom, we sang this song.  Don't know if you've ever heard it before?  It's called, 'Never Once,' and I just thought of China and cried."

Somewhere in that I jumped up to find my CD…Matt Redman's "10,000 Reasons"!

Oh yeah!  I know that song!

Sang it in February at the Created for Care Retreat with 450 adoptive and foster mamas with tears streaming down my face!  HAD TO HAVE the CD because every time I've heard it on the radio now I'm thinking about China!  I sing it LOUD in the car…over and over again!  It's become one of many theme songs I have for this mission trip to China…

Had to share it with y'all tonight.

Our FAITHFUL GOD is going with us all the way!  We will not be alone!  As we stand on the mountaintops of the Great Wall of China…as we kneel on the battlefields in an orphanage to whisper His love into the precious little hearts of all the children…we do not walk this journey alone!  JOY filling our hearts!!!

Getting so excited!!!

And here is another clip of Matt Redman sharing about the song…

Prayer Guide

Don't know how to pray for the ACT July Mission Team?

CHINA Missions Trip - Prayer Guide
July 10 – 20, 2014

Believing that God desires our specific prayers (James 4:2b), here is a list of things that you can keep in prayer.  Let His Spirit prompt you and lead.   Lord, teach us to pray…

¨     Protection  ~ The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.  2 Thessalonians 3:3

¨     Safety and Travel Mercies  (for flights to be smooth and on time…for luggage to not be lost…that we would find our way…)  ~ For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.  Psalm 91:11

¨     Health  (specifically for smog issues and cold/flu season, odd smells that could turn our stomachs, squat potties, that no disease or illness would come near us…) ~ I will bring health and healing…I will heal My people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.  Jeremiah 33:6

¨     Rest ~ for jet lag as we literally flip-flop day and night.  China is 12 hours ahead of U.S. time ~ The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”  Exodus 33:14

¨     Provision for our every need ~ GRACE ~ for all the details that He knows fully and we know in part ~ And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.  2 Corinthians 9:8

¨     Strength ~ Servant’s Heart ~ If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.  Amen.   1 Peter 4:11

¨     Unity of the team ~ May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Romans 15:5

¨     Compassion ~ To see Jesus in the ones we serve ~ The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.”  Matthew 25:40

¨     For others to see Jesus in us ~ the aroma of Christ ~ That God would translate to their souls ~ …you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the Word of Life… Philippians 2:15-16

¨     God-ordained moments ~ time spent the way He wants ~ Be wise in the way you act…make the most of every opportunity.  Colossians 4:5

¨     That our trip would count for all eternity, and have eternal value ~ If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.  It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.  1 Corinthians 3:12-13

¨     Transformed lives (our own while we are there and afterwards at home, church, ministry, work…as well as the lives God impacts through us while we are there…) ~ And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.    2 Corinthians 3:18

¨     The people of China (the lost, the hurting, for revival to come to China, for the gospel to spread in one of the largest nations of the world) ~ …I am about to come and gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see My glory.  Isaiah 66:18

¨     For God’s purpose to prevail (that His will would be accomplished) ~ I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.  Isaiah 46:10b

¨     For our families at home (for parents who worry for their children, for spouses who care for children alone, for children who miss their parent…) ~ I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.  2 Timothy 1:12
